Gianluigi Donnarumma, the young Italian goalkeeper who has been in sensational form for Milan this season, has suffered a string of injuries that have kept him out of action for much of the campaign.
The first injury was sustained in the opening match of the Serie A season against Udinese. He then missed three games with a knee problem before suffering a hamstring strain during the away game at Sassuolo in late February.
Despite being sidelined, Donnarumma's performances were still impressive and he continued to be a key player for Milan throughout the rest of the season. However, he did not feature in any matches after his return from the hamstring issue and he was forced to undergo surgery on his left ankle earlier this month.
This latest setback means that Donnarumma will miss the remainder of the season and could even require further surgery. The club has already confirmed that he is likely to be out for six months or longer.
For Milan, the loss of such a talented young talent is a major blow. Donnarumma has become a fan favourite at San Siro and his presence in goal has been crucial in helping the team achieve their current position in the league table.
With the likes of Marco Borriello and Alessio Romagnoli now filling in for Donnarumma, it remains to be seen how well the team can cope without him. But given the level of support he has received from fans and teammates alike, it is clear that Milan will be looking to bounce back from this setback as soon as possible.
